Netflix in NZ

UPDATE 2 Feb 2014: see my updated post for a much easier setup...

A month ago I decided to get Netflix working on my Apple TV 2. This proved to be a bit of a challenge as we live in New Zealand, but I managed to get it working.

The main thing to work around is getting Netflix to think you are located in the United States. So to do that I did the following things...

1. Sign up for a VPN service based in the States. I chose Overplay.net. Use your normal NZ credit card for this.

2. Sign up for a United States credit card. Entropay was the one that fit the bill. It's a virtual Visa card, you can use it for anything that takes Visa. And it is a US based credit card, so Netflix will accept it. Its a prepay model, you just load money onto it using your NZ credit card via the Entropay website. They charge a 5% fee for money loaded onto the card, but hey that's the price you pay.

3. Install DD-WRT firmware on a spare Router. Configure the router to auto login to the VPN you signed up for in step 1. This step is the most technically challenging. The Overplay.net website has a very good setup application you can run on Windows/Mac.

4. Configure your Apple TV 2 (or other similar device) to use the Router you setup with the VPN, as it's Gateway.

5. On your PC/laptop, install the Overplay.net software. Connect to a US VPN server using the Overplay.net software. Signup with Netflix.com using your Entropay US Visa card and a made up US street address. The address has to have a valid area code and state, e.g. CA 90210.
Make sure you choose the streaming only Netflix plan. NB. You only need to do this step once to create your Netflix account. You don't need to have Overplay.net VPN connected on your PC to use your Apple TV (or other device).

6. On your Apple TV 2, you should now have Netflix as the first item in the Internet menu. Select Netflix and login with your Netflix account you just created.

7. Sit back and watch thousands of TV shows/movies on your Apple TV 2 (or other device).

As far as making up an address with the credit card supplier, i tried and was not able to as they want to "review" my details. They want proof of who you are by sending in details of passport/a bill with address on etc etc.

Entropay requires your real address. The one that matches your local credit card. You only need to enter a US address, when creating your Netflix account. Netflix do not check that the address is yours or not.

Entropay did require me to confirm my local NZ address, by sending them a photocopy of my passport and credit card.
Thank-you I will give it a go but with a Roku to see if it will work...
