Ultra Fast Broadband is Here in 100Mb Goodness

My UFB install day (Part 2) dawned clear and sunny. Received a phone call from Chorus the afternoon before to confirm I would be home and a txt from the installer the night before to left me know they would be around just after 8am.

At 8:30 am on 2 May 2014, they knocked on the door, and quickly got started.

It was an overhead install, and they were up a ladder and running a new line.

The ETP was already there from a couple of weeks ago. They then put some conduit up the side of the house.

Then they used some fancy device and air compressor, to blow the fibre back from the ETP up the conduit down the pipe and up to the aggreagation point a couple of houses up the road.

Joined it up - a bit like welding he said - the fibre ends are fused together and supported by some heat shrink.

They removed the old copper phone line. Which was in remarkedly good condition, considering it must be around 50 years old at least.

The ETP was all closed up after the fibre was joined to the existing run.

The line from the pole looks at first glance just like the old phone line.

The ONT in the hall way was connected to a CAT 6 cable that runs down to my cupboard with the Orcon Genius Router.
That bit took some work, as they had to reuse the CAT 6 cable that joined to the old phone line. But they sorted that in about half an hour.

Then they had to connect my existing phone distribution board to the ATA phone port on the Genius Router. I had to find a RJ-11 cable that they could use. The Genius modem came with one, so no problem there.

Then, boom the existing landline phones all worked, and internet was up.

I did this speed test as soon as the Chorus guys said, "try the internet" ...

Then I streamed a You Tube video, full screen at 1080p quality. And it was so smooth and no stuttering at all.

The two guys left a few minutes later (around 11am), after they packed up their gear. Thanks heaps guys. Mike and Nick from Vision Stream.

Now I feel like Uncle Scrooge going for a swim in my own swimming pool of Mega bits.

Its embarassingly fast.

If UFB is available in your street, call your ISP and get it. You will love it. If its not available yet, keep a watch on the Chorus site and get is soon as its ready.
